James Wilson’s Manchester United contract expires at the end of the season and he is playing for his future.

Wilson is on loan at Aberdeen, where he has two goals in six games. The latest was a special long range strike in midweek.

After a career blighted by injuries Wilson is enjoying playing regular football and the goals are beginning to flow.

Former United star Clayton Blackmore was impressed by his efforts and wants to see him get another chance at Old Trafford.

Blackmore commented on Twitter to say that he wants to see Wilson given a chance at United in the number 10 role.

What needs to happen?

A lot. This is an incredibly bold call from Blackmore and an opportunity which Wilson might just not be cut out for.

Firstly he needs to earn a new United contract, and he can only do that by scoring lots of goals. He probably needs to reach around 15 to get the club’s attention.

Opportunities back at United for the former England under-21 international will remain limited, and chances would be dependent on the club’s transfer activity next summer.

Wilson would probably need for a managerial change at United too.

Jose Mourinho has shown little interest in him, and even strong performances in Scotland are unlikely to persuade him to give Wilson a first team spot even if the club hand him a new extension.

The ball is in Wilson’s court for now. His chance at United has probably passed him by. But while there is a glimmer of hope, he must keep fighting. Blackmore’s comments can only fuel his returning confidence.
