Tom Heaton’s current contract at Manchester United expires in June, along with Casemiro’s. But the Brazilian has suggested why an extension for the third-choice goalkeeper is needed.
Despite not playing a competitive game for years, Tom Heaton is setting records for Manchester United with his age.
Heaton’s last competitive match for United was on the 1st of February 2023, in the Carabao Cup semi-final, which was one of three games he has played since returning in July 2021.
Despite being 40, United remains open to extending Heaton’s contract, with his position as a dressing room leader considered vital within the club.
Now, Casemiro has explained the importance of Heaton.

Casemiro explains the importance of Tom Heaton
Heaton is often overlooked by those not savvy to the ongoings at United, with his on-pitch contributions minimal. But Heaton is considered a leader by United, and losing him would be a big blow.
Now, Casemiro has spoken on the Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel, discussing all things United.
While in the changing rooms at Old Trafford, Ferdinand asked Casemiro who the loudest players are, with Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes named, along with Tom Heaton.
“He is very important. Very important for us. He pushes the training, he pushes in the game, of course, he doesn’t play, but he pushes every time. For me, everyone needs this guy; he helps the room so much.”
Heaton is a brilliant character to have off the pitch, clearly valued by Casemiro. Part of this is likely due to Heaton being at United as a youngster back in the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

The goalkeeper will be 40 by the end of this season…
Manchester United should transition Heaton’s role with a new contract
Recent reports indicate that United are still looking to extend Heaton’s stay at the club, citing his impact on Senne Lammens and potentially Radek Vitek as key factors.
Lammens has spoken highly of Heaton, admitting that his senior teammate doesn’t get the recognition he deserves.
So this summer, keeping Heaton seems like the sensible thing to do.
But it shouldn’t be as third choice goalkeeper, a role that can be occupied by a youngster; instead, Heaton should be transitioned into a player-coach role, working towards badges while still working with the players.
Heaton should be kept around the club for as long as he wants, just probably not on the playing roster.
