AZ Alkmaar's prolific striker Boadu misses chance for United audition

AZ Alkmaar are set to be without top scorer Myron Boadu against United on Thursday night due to suspension.

He picked up two yellow cards in their 2-2 draw with Partizan and the teenager misses out on the chance of a lifetime to play at Old Trafford.

It is a big shame for him, as he could have used the opportunity on the big stage as an audition for United.

If you have not heard of him before, it won’t be long. Boadu has the potential to become one of European football’s top stars.

At just 18-year-old he is already a regular for the Eredivisie side and has been scoring for fun.

His record this season is quite remarkable. He has scored 16 goals already in all competitions and has provided 12 assists.

Four of these goals have come in his five Europa League games so far, plus two assists in the competition.

Opportunity missed, but not over

Boadu recently made his international debut for the Netherlands, and scored in the 5-0 victory over Estonia. He should be part of the Euro 2020 squad.

His absence at Old Trafford on Thursday will be a frustration for scouts across Europe who would have wanted to see how he matched up against United. It also might have been a chance to give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a nudge.

Even so, he is a talented player who should be on United’s radar. It’s only a matter of time before he is snapped up by a top European club.

Boadu is the same age as Mason Greenwood and is playing and scoring on a regular basis. Adding him would be a cheaper way to boost United’s striking options.

He is not a player we are expecting United to be moving for in January, there are other targets, but a move for a young talent like Boadu is preferable than an ageing journeyman like Edin Dzeko.

If Erling Haaland proves too expensive or moves elsewhere, United will have to look at alternatives.

And should Boadu keep up his prolific record of scoring and creating goals between now and next summer, he is a striker the club should strongly consider.
