Everything about last summer was terrible for Anthony Martial.
Uncertainty dogged his future, with Jose Mourinho unconvinced over the forward.
There were claims Mourinho wanted to sell him, with his contractual situation unresolved.
Then Martial had an extended break from pre-season for the birth of his child, which reportedly angered Mourinho. Player and manager were not on the same page.
The situation was a mess, with Mourinho already infuriated by a lack of transfers.
It did not make for a happy backdrop for Martial, who had just watched his French teammates lift the World Cup. He was not even selected for the squad.
A year on, and Anthony Martial appears to be in a far better place. He uploaded a picture on Instagram of himself grinning from ear to ear.
Martial’s future was resolved after he signed a new contract in January.
But we won’t kid ourselves, his form tailed off at the end of the season and his effort levels were questioned.
This summer it is a fresh start, and Martial has returned with the right attitude.
He has chance for a drama free pre-season, to give him the conditions he needs to succeed.
It is no surprise his season last year was marred by inconsistency after the way it began.
United have paid £44.7 million for Martial, The Telegraph reported last year. It still only feels like he has scratched the surface of his potential.
Seeing him train with a smile on his face bodes well for a fresh start, and his summer from hell last year seems a long time ago already.
