Villarreal v United team news

Luke Shaw has not travelled with the squad, while Mason Greenwood is still missing after testing positive for Covid.

Paul Pogba and Raphael Varane are longer term absentees and neither will play any part here.

Edinson Cavani also missed the 4-1 defeat at Watford and he remains a fitness doubt for this game.

Everyone else should be fit to play, and Phil Jones has even made the trip to Spain, despite not being included in United’s Champions League squad and therefore being ineligible to play.

Our prediction: Villarreal v Man Utd

This is a very tricky game and if United’s level of performance stays the same as it has in recent games, it will be another tough night.

It is also hard to know how much will change after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking, given his entire coaching staff remain in place and there has been just one day of training since the Watford debacle.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been immense in this season’s Champions League and could well make the difference again on a huge night for United.

We’ll back Carrick to secure a crucial narrow win but it is hard to know what to expect from United in this one and Villarreal will be very strong opponents.

Our prediction: Villarreal 0-1 United
