Manchester United disappointed as a whole unit in timid defeat to Arsenal on Sunday afternoon. It continues a woeful start to the Premier League season with only seven points from six games.

There were a few players that stood out in particular for disappointing performances.

Paul Pogba

There’s no better place to start than with the match-loser. Pogba gave away the penalty and it was a typically stupid challenge from United’s most expensive signing. Talk about disappointing and Paul Pogba’s name can’t be far from your lips.

There remain many United fans who have faith that Pogba could be great. But even those supporters are consistently underwhelmed or disappointed by Pogba who costs the side defensively and doesn’t make up for it in attack.

It’s incredibly frustrating because the level of his talent is clear for all to see at times. He is technically incredible, blessed with the perfect footballing physique and is a fun player to watch at his best. That’s rarely been on show and was missing again in the loss to Arsenal.

At least he accepted where his weaknesses lie.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

It was one Wan-Bissaka’s poorest performances, coming so soon after his best ever at the Parc des Princes against Paris Saint-Germain.

He let Aubameyang go free at the back post on two occasions and Bukayo Saka had a free header on one occasion too.

According to WhoScored.com, he made no tackles or clearances but committed two fouls and lost possession once. A quick bounce back to his recent good form is needed.

Fred

Fred has to be mentioned if we’re talking about losing possession. He can be so good defensively for United but under the pressure of Arsenal, Chelsea and Leipzig, he has really struggled.

In the Leipzig game, he more than made up for it with his own pressing, winning the ball back and positive contributions. None of that was on show against Arsenal. His role was a crucial one if United were to win. As it was, his inability to fulfil his responsibilities was key in United losing.

Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes

A quick, disappointed nod towards Rashford and Fernandes who went missing for far too long. They weren’t terrible and the tactical system was partly responsible for their ghost-like appearance on the day after Halloween.

But they were underwhelming and offered not even a single moment of excitement except for Rashford’s cross-field through ball to Greenwood early in the game.

They have come up big in the recent past and so an off-day is acceptable. Anthony Martial was much missed on Sunday though.
