Manchester United lost in the European Super Cup Final against Real Madrid despite a spirited second half display. Here are the highlights and post-match reaction.
United lost 2-1, with Romelu Lukaku pulling a goal back after Madrid had gone 2-0 up through Casemiro and Isco. The European Cup winners were fortunate to have both of their goals allowed as Casemiro was clearly offside and Isco’s goal might have been ruled out for a foul on Nemanja Matic by another referee. On the balance of play, nobody could say Madrid didn’t deserve their first-half lead as they grew in confidence following a bright start from United.
Despite the defeat Jose Mourinho has reason to be proud of the response of his team; Marcus Rashford missed a great chance, as did Lukaku before he scored, and United might have got a result where other sides have been embarrassed. United, however, are judged by their own standards and not the standards of others, and so it will hopefully prove to be a good lesson as the club prepares to begin the league season this weekend.
