Luke Shaw’s selection against City came as a surprise considering his last Premier League start was back in August.
It was a gamble from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer which paid off and Shaw deserves praise for the way he slotted back in.
Shaw’s only recent start came away at Astana and after Ashley Young was picked against Tottenham, the battle for the left-back spot was wide open, with Brandon Williams also in contention.
There were certainly eyebrows raised among fans when Shaw was picked, and to his credit, he backed manager Solskjaer up with a solid performance.
Shaw lasted 88 minutes before being taken off after receiving treatment, and United were able to close the game out and hold on for a momentous 2-1 win at The Etihad.
Shaw did not have it easy going up against a City attack boasting Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne.
He stood up to the task and did not let United down at all, holding his own against some of the league’s best attacking players.
Shaw made six clearances and two interceptions and also blocked one shot.
He was not too adventurous going forward but this was a sensible approach given United’s lead and the dangers City posed.
Shaw proved a point with his performance and he will have a big role to play over a busy two months of fixtures ahead. If he can stay fit he can be a big asset to United.
