Birmingham fans react as Chong returns to United training
Manchester United’s Tahith Chong was enjoying a successful loan spell at Birmingham City before a thigh injury struck and hampered his progress in November.
He underwent surgery and his road to recovery is well underway, having been spotted back in training with United at Carrington.
That does mean that his loan at St Andrew’s is over or that Ralf Rangnick is considering him as an option, but it is just that United is the place where he is continuing his rehabilitation.
He is not in full training yet, and United’s official website says that Chong is still weeks away from that stage yet.
Lee Bowyer has said that he expects Chong back next Monday, and it is to be hoped that he can return to first team action before the end of February.
Bowyer’s side currently sit 17th in the second tier, 13 points ahead of Peterborough who occupy the final relegation spot as it stands.
United’s next opponents, Middlesbrough, are currently in 6th, and Birmingham are 12 points behind them in the table.
Birmingham will hope that Chong’s eventual return can have them pushing upwards rather than looking down come the closing weeks of the season.
Chong got three assists from his 13 Blues appearances and was already a fan favourite within months of his arrival.
That means unsurprisingly that the photo of his return to United training was greeted gleefully by Blues supporters on Twitter.
Since Chong got injured, Birmingham have signed another United loanee in the shape of Teden Mengi and it is to be hoped that the pair can play together in blue before the end of the campaign…
