Manchester United named among favourites to sign Mauro Icardi: A reality check

This week bookmakers placed Manchester United among the favourites to sign Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi.
The Sun report United are 7/4 to sign Icardi with Ladbrokes, narrowly behind Real Madrid (6/4).
Well that sounds very exciting, Icardi is a fantastic striker with a strong goal record, but we would recommend saving your money.

Reality check: Don’t put your money on Icardi moving to Old Trafford

Firstly if Inter Milan are to sell Icardi, it will cost United a staggering £97.4 million to meet the release clause in his contract.
United won’t be spending that sort of money on a striker to sit on the bench.
If they did, where would that leave Romelu Lukaku?

Marcus Rashford is already struggling for playing time behind Lukaku, and while there is still an argument to be made to add another striker, United don’t need to spend close to £100 million on one.
The money is better served on wingers, midfielders, or centre-backs.

Icardi is a great player, he struck 29 goals in 34 games for Inter last season and scored an impressive volley against Tottenham in the Champions League this week.
A move to United though is unlikely, and this is a rumour which has little chance of paying off.
