Markus Neumayr was a United player between 2003 and 2006 during which time he captained the club’s reserve team. He now plays for FC Luzern in the Swiss Super League and here gives his view of United’s start to the season as well as an update on the progress of his own club.

United’s start to the season has had a lot of ups and downs, the performances of the team and most of the players haven’t been consistent at all which can be seen in the results and where they are in the table.
The Swansea game has been one of the better performances up until now.  With Pogba and Ibrahimovic both having scored it can be seen as the start of something. This enthusiasm and determination needs to be carried into the next few games so the team can build a level of consistency in regards to results and performances.
Mourinho being appointed as the new manager hasn’t made things easier, he needs to create a hierarchy in the team and this can take weeks and months. The new players need to get used to their new surroundings and what it means to play for United. Moreover, the more experienced players need to fight for their place in the team so there is a lot of uncertainty for everyone.
Wayne Rooney has come in for a lot of criticism in recent weeks, Wayne is a world-class player but definitely isn’t at his best right now. He needs to find the motivation to be one of the top players in the world again.
Wazza can be the man who makes the difference every game but he needs to get his focus back on hard work and the simple things in football.
For my own club FC Luzern, at the moment we are back on track having taken seven points from the last three games and reached the quarter finals of the cup. Personally I’m not completely satisfied with myself and we are in fourth spot behind Basel, Sion and Young Boys Bern.
