EXCLUSIVE: Curtis - Mourinho Could Ring Changes
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho should be expected to ring the changes after the Stamford Bridge horror show at the weekend, says former United defender John Curtis.
Change is a certainty anyway following the injury to Eric Bailly but the shambolic 4-0 defeat though the form of the team in general suggests that a shake up may be necessary.
‘If you look at the performances from the Chelsea game, there are players who didn’t play well enough, who potentially don’t deserve to start because of their performance,’ John said on the United in Focus podcast. ‘Bailly is going to be a massive loss for us. For me he’s been absolutely superb in the heart of the defence, so he’s going to be a big miss. Fellaini, Blind, Smalling obviously – they weren’t as good as they can be. We’ve seen them play better. There are players at the football club who have the experience and have the know-how who could certainly handle the pressurised environment.’
Curtis worries that Bailly’s injury, and United’s defensive frailty, may provoke a cautious approach from the manager. ‘Does that guarantee Fellaini’s inclusion in the starting eleven? It’s a tricky one and there’s a lot of unknowns going into these fixtures coming up. The manager’s got a lot of decisions to make, and that’s bad, it’s tough, the more decisions you’re asked to make the more mistakes you end up making. So hopefully the guys who do come in are up to the challenge.’
John was speaking with Matt Galea on the UIF podcast. Listen to the latest episode here.
