Charlie Savage joined Forest Green Rovers on loan from Manchester United during the January transfer window.

It is his first loan spell away from Old Trafford and he has now made his debut for the League 1 outfit, against Charlton last night.

He came on after 66 minutes of their 1-0 home defeat last night, making what is only his second ever senior appearance.

Everton legend Duncan Ferguson is the new manager of Forest Green and told the club website after the game what he made of Savage’s performance.

Charlie Savage praised after making Forest Green debut

When asked about Savage’s performance, Ferguson said: “He did really really well. Really pleased with him.

“That’s football, isn’t it? You get your chance, you’re ready. And one thing about Charlie is he works his socks off in training.

“He’s a great young man to work with every day and he’s full of energy and enthusiasm.

“That’s what you want. I thought he was absolutely excellent.”

Savage will be hoping to build on last night’s cameo performance and earn a first start before too long for Ferguson’s struggling side.

They are rooted to the bottom of the table in the third tier, seven points away from survival, and still waiting for their first win under Ferguson.

He certainly cannot be accused of taking the easy option, as the BBC’s Simon Stone tweeted out that he had plenty of other offers.

Savage risks being in the same position of another talented United midfielder in Ethan Galbraith, who was relegated from League 1 last season with Doncaster Rovers.

The 19-year-old will get experience of men’s football in this first loan spell of his career, going and playing games which matter and United fans will be keeping an eye on his progress after this promising debut.
