The major news coming out of the press regarding transfers this morning mainly relates to the merry-go-round of strikers that everyone is keen to see get kicked into gear.
The Express–never the most reliable when it comes to transfers–go big with the suggestion that United are ready to spend £100m on Romelu Lukaku from Everton. Big statement this and while we don’t doubt that someone at United may well be feeding this one, we think there’s an ulterior motive at play.
Neil Custis was present at the AFMUP golf day on Tuesday where he played with a few old boys. Later that night he’s breaking the story that Wayne Rooney is set to return to Everton although it remains unclear if this is a subsidised loan deal or a free transfer. Custis’ connections to Rooney are normally reliable and this one makes sense. (The Rooney issue is one that has got a LOT of people talking on our Twitter feed.)
However, the Express get a little ahead of themselves, or have been told to. Why would United pay £100m for Lukaku when their main sticking point for their prime target, Antione Griezmann, was the release clause of €85m? It seems more likely that in an effort to accelerate the Morata deal from Real Madrid, United are threatening to spend their money elsewhere. And yet, it seems so illogical that it wouldn’t surprise us if the Lukaku move had legs.
Elsewhere, Inter Milan are attempting to test United’s desperation by declaring they want somewhere near €50m for the 28 year old Ivan Perišić. The interest might feel legit but such a move is more of a gamble than, say, playing Anthony Martial on the left and seeing how that works out.
With United due to depart for their pre-season tour over the weekend it does feel likely that one name will be brought in; if and when that is is anybody’s guess. Why, it could almost be as soon as we press publish.
